The mind behind Linux | Linus Torvalds

Linus Torvalds transformed technology twice — first with the Linux kernel, which helps power the Internet, and again with Git, the source code management system used by developers worldwide. In a rare interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Torvalds discusses with remarkable openness the personality traits that prompted his unique philosophy of work, engineering and life. “I am not a visionary, I’m an engineer,” Torvalds says. “I’m perfectly happy with all the people who are walking around and just staring at the clouds … but I’m looking at the ground, and I want to fix the pothole that’s right in front of me before I fall in.”

  1. Passion is Personal.
What you do for your Love and Love what you do.
You can make difference not only in your Life but others as well.

Even a introvert person can shape the world without speaking a word.

Lights! Camera! does count but not everywhere.
It's the Action! of yours that matters the most.

So, stay in Action! even when you are on a Cut!
Keeping up will give a head start!

  2. Think Linus is more of a tesla. edison was more of a businessman looking to make mass profit. even if he was not a visionary having linux being open sourced didn't require Linus to be one. Thank you for everything Mr. Torvalds.

  3. His anti social behavior is why we can't 100% game on Linux 🙂 Great mind yes, but he made a huge mistakes letting Microsoft taking over the OS world

  4. Imagine if he had started a business with Linux instead. I wonder what would have happened; whether it would have been as successful. But maybe it's an impossible hypothetical in the first place since it seems that Linus is not the businessman type. Like he says himself, he's an engineer.

  7. Every project needs some kind of talent or taste, you need to have an instinct feeling to do what's needed to do next.

  8. There are not more than 1000 people in this world that could read the code of Linux system and give useful feedback, the project is growing biger and biger, making it harder for newbie in this area to get involved in.

  9. You can just feel the tension in the audience, a slight confusion where they don't really know what to clap for, yet they feel inclined to clap for everything because he's such an important person who has done so much for the tech industry.

  10. There are known controversies about Torvalds' verbal abuse on the mailing list. I want verbal abusers to be held resposible for their abuse.

  11. The only thing i got from this video is that, when Elon says he is in Edison camp, everyone is offended, but when Linus does it, everyone just shrugs it off.
