Poland is changing. In 2015, the far-right Law and Justice party, or PiS, won both the presidential election and a slim parliamentary majority. Since then, they’ve been working to cement their power by firing judges, purging the military and civil service, and cracking down on protesters and the media. All of this has put the country on a collision course with the European Union that could threaten Europe’s hard-won peace and prosperity following centuries of conflict.

To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalists Sam Ellis and Liz Scheltens use maps to tell the story and chart their effects on foreign policy.

  1. Two corrections:

At 7:17 Viktor Orban is incorrectly described as President, when he is actually the Prime Minister.
At 5:27 and 7:32 Finland is mislabeled as not being a member state of the European Union. Finland joined the EU in 1995.

  2. Poland and Hungary are last normal countries in Europe.
Only for Germany it's profitable to being in UE, they steal and break other countries in UE! UE is undemocratic, Poland choosen goverment and they can do in their country what they want

  3. i'm from Poland, from Warsaw (the capitol). For me, a teenager, PiS means death of Polish democracy. They do whatever they want, and hold power because of their social programs such as 500+ (they give 500 zlotys, equality of 1/4 of minimal wage to people with more than one child). This program is constantly ruining our economy, but the poor and people from villages vote for them anyways.

  4. I am so proud of Poland, Hungary, Italy & every other European nation wanting to keep their culture & race strong

  5. The rise of the right wing is worrying. Maybe it's time to start another Red Scare but targetting the right wing this time

  6. Guys progressives are just mad because Poland refused refugees but said they were open to legal immigrants just not refugees.A sovereign country should be allowed to make up its own mind. Not forced to do things to hurt itself or the people do not want.

  7. Can’t believe that people still love Poland despite the country hates non whites and the country is also islamicphbic.

Hope in the future Poland 🇵🇱 could become a peaceful place for those who are not white and non Christian to visit the country.

Edit: That’s why a lot of Polish people are leaving the country to places like the UK 🇬🇧, EU and the US 🇺🇸 also bc they don’t have jobs

  8. All those lies about Poland should be broght upon the court one day to give Poland its honour back again. I hope to see it.

  9. The eu just doesnt work. Its all about control through fear. Leaving results in being excluded from trade simply because all other countries are forced to by the eu and are too afraid to stand up for themselves. Poland did the right thing by refusing to take in refugees. It showed that poland cares about its country and isnt afraid to prove this. EU has no control. Its all an act that is bound to fall apart once poland shows everyone else how little power the eu actually has. They dont want to risk nuclear war which means thay are very conservative and afraid to act.

  10. I as a Lithuanian suport polands actions here in Lithuania we say lietuva lietuviams (lithuania for lithuanians) and pushing muslims in to eastern countries wont work

  11. Why is Poland presented as the bad boy and Hungary is merely mentioned as its defender? Poland is imitating Hungary in its semi authoritarian moves. Why did not you cover them both and compare them?

  12. All anti EU comments – can you elaborate what is it about the EU that is so bad? Comparing it to the USSR or to body wastes does not count. As far as I know, the EU ensures economic prosperity, freedom of movement, and common goods in general.
