New Dell G7 15″ RTX 2070 Max Q Review

The new Dell G7 costs $100 more than the G5 but it is built out of aluminum and is available in a 17″ chassis.
Specs are i7 8750h , RTX 2070 max Q, 1 x 16GB Ram (I test in dual channel as well), 512 GB SSD, 1080p 144 Hz IPS panel.
I test gaming in single channel and dual channel, V Ray benchmark and real time audio processing.

  1. Thanks for the review. Thinking of getting the maxed out G7 over the m15 R2. The design choices for RAM not soldered on, WiFi not soldered on, ports on the back, larger battery option, number pad keys, and the G7 now has similar specs options as the m15 R2 and seems like the way to go. Thoughts and thanks.

  2. What do you think about this laptop(1660ti) long term? And for hobbyist photo and video editing, last time I checked my major wasn’t film making 🙄

  3. Very good videos, congratulations.

I'm a little worried, I just bought a Dell G7 with the i7-9750h, RTX 2060 and 16Gb. All the videos about the G7 speak badly of the temperatures, the laptop arrives in a couple of days, how could I improve temperatures?

  4. I was so close to pulling the trigger on this variant laptop but with dual channel RAM, until I saw those temps. Nope! Especially after two Dellienware m15 laptops overheating as well.

  5. Thank you for an excellent, in-depth review of the machine, comparisons with the Aero 15-X 2070 Max Q (my other consideration) and sharing your optimal settings.
I just picked up this exact model and this video is the most useful and informative.
Your efforts are truly and greatly appreciated.
I'm looking to pick up a secondary 16 gb RAM stick for improved dual channel performance, and added memory.
Looking forward to more content from you!

  6. Thanks for the video! Wondering why the G5 and G7 had such bad thermals by default if we don't adjust the CPU settings ourselves – is this just Dell being lazy? Or to put it in other terms, with other laptops if we cap their CPU frequencies + undervolt, would their temps all improve as dramatically as seen here? I've seen undervolting as a common method for lowering temps but not adjusting frequencies. Thanks again!

  7. Great review! I recently purchased the G5 (9750H, RTX 2060, 16GBs ram, 144hz display) for $1250 USD brand new. Now I'm not sure if I should have bought the G7 instead of the G5 even though it was so much cheaper :/ Thoughts?

What are the implications on performance when you undervolt it? From all your videos I can see that the total wattage drawn by the CPU lowers to ~40W, but I can't determine the real life performance difference vs when thermal throttled.

  8. I love your videos! My 7590 is arriving on Friday and I was wondering if you know whether I should A) Purchase 2×8 GB RAM and replace both sticks, B) Purchase the cheaper 1×16 RAM and replace one stick, or C) Purchase 1×16 RAM and keep it as the only stick? I'm new to upgrading RAM so I don't really know much about this. Thanks in advance!

  9. Did you make sure the CPU fan was actually functioning?! In comparison to the GPU fan it's doesn't appear to be 'less' heat dissipation as you concluded, it looks entirely non-existant…

  10. How much degree drop to expect with a weaker GPU? With the 1650 for example… will it be way cooler and quieter or just a bit?

  11. The 2070 maxq is a waste of money. It barely performs better than a regular 2060 plus the 2070 laptops are expensive. Not worth it.

  12. Excellent video, thanks a lot! So you have 144 Hz display on this version is it good enough compare to aero 15 or Asus/MSI competitors?

  13. Awesome videos mate. Just want to ask, if you're going to choose a gaming laptop that you think you can stick with for say 3 years which one would it be? Thank you.

  14. If you're a music producer/enthusiast you'll be pleasantly surprised to know that this G7 gaming laptop is actually perfect for music production. It comes with ASIO sound drivers as standard & works seamlesly with Ableton Live (cpu stays idle at 5% usage) alongside Omnisphere 2.6 with hardware integration support and other popular vst's without any lag or issues just ensure you choose DUAL RAM ideally 2x16gb sticks & you're good to go. DO NOT TRUST Latency Mon as a sound benchmark program, it sticks to the 1st core of the multi processor & gives  misleading results. I am a music producer & I would advise those stuck on using macbooks to consider switching as windows machines are finally coming of age & Windows is by far more accessable than IOS.

  15. As always, you're one of the most thorough reviewers out there. 👍

I was just shopping and noticed that the Dell G7 can now be ordered with the new 9750h CPU and RTX 2080 Max-Q, but it still ships with the same 180W AC adapter. Do you think that adapter can drive all that hardware? It sounds like the G7 was already pretty close to the wire with the 2070.
