ESOcast 197 Light: GRAVITY uncovers stormy exoplanet skies

The GRAVITY instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) has made the first direct observation of an exoplanet using optical interferometry. This method revealed a complex exoplanetary atmosphere with clouds of iron and silicates swirling in a planet-wide storm. The technique presents unique possibilities for characterising many of the exoplanets known today.

  1. Thumbs up for the incredible accomplishment! But thumbs down for almost no content! C'mon! Let see the details instead of 1:19 of 4K UHD CAD drawing fluff. There is a HUGE story to tell here.

The image shown in this video, as well as the subsequent articles relating to it – are incredibly deceiving and make people think that we can now directly image exo-planets 130 light years away in this amazing resolution. ESO simply obtained more accurate data regarding the planets atmosphere, and it needs to be clarified that this is an artist impression.

  3. Please can you show us actual images/data plots as well? I'm sure there are a quite a few of us that are a lot more excited about those than renderings.
