Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as “artistic”, such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men’s apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women’s programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

  3. How funny, look at how the male competitors are clothed! And look at women , even Olympics displays gender bias.😜
If we are considering doing away with gender bias, then I would welcome the day when these male competitors come dressed in a slip of an underwear and show their skills.

  4. 한국인 있나요????~~~김지훈 선수 잘했는데 기량차이가 조금 보이네요 수고하셨습니다~~~~~~지난 올림픽 보는 재미로 사는 1인

  5. I'm sorry I know zonderlands routine is impressive and very difficult but his execution is garbage. No way he he got that 8.6 almost 8.7 E score legs coming apart bent arms not hitting vertical on almost every non release skill his legs came apart. I literally used the same guidebook that the Olympic judges go by for form requirements and point deductions proportionate to the scale of flaw for individual skills and I came up with a 8.236 averaged out over 6 separate views and scoring.. he should been more like 16.136 not even making top 3. The "wow factor" may indeed make the crowd go nuts heck even the judges and other gymnasts to. Theres no doubt it's an incredibly hard and impressive routine however, no matter how impressed you are as a judge that afore mentioned "wow factor" is NOT a factor for judging in any way shape or form once the D score is calculated and confirmed, so with that in mind he technically shouldn't have even metaled much less the gold. I didn't have to much of a problem with 2nd 3rd and fourth place but they where most certainly to generous with the scoring and I really believe the "wow factor" played a role. Just to busy being impressed/distracted by the sheer magnitude of difficulty to catch the mistakes which normally would be seen and accounted. This isn't an insult to any of the gymnasts at all, and ive got nothing but respect for them, I mean the sheer time, dedication and willpower it takes to get up to such a high level of skill is flat out jaw dropping. You just cant help but respect that kind of dedication. It's the judge's where my problem is

  6. 2012 Olympics Epke wins gold. Now, SIX years later, he's became World champion again in Doha, but not only that, he became a father and…..yes……he's a DOCTOR! Dutch Superman!
